Coins Stolen

News Flash!!!    Mickey Smith's VAN is Stolen from the Lexington Coin Show

Subject: NCNA - MAJOR THEFT AT LEXINGTON NC SHOW

The Lexington Coin Club show was hit by a theft. A dealer that most of us know, Micky Smith's (of Fayetteville) van was stolen from the rear parking lot at the Armory. It was locked and the keys removed. It wasn't hardly 75 feet from the rear door. He left the van and returned inside to get his cooler and tell everyone that he was leaving. When he got back outside, his van it was gone. It didn't take 5 minutes. He lost just about everything that he carries to Shows. Be on the lookout for a large assortment of slabbed and raw coins. Cases were the silver hard type. If any approaches to sell large assortment please report and ask for ID. You could contact your local Police and the the Investigating Officer at the Lexington Police Department. Phone # 336-243-3319. If you have any information or see anything please be sure and call.

We will do what we can to get a better description of some of the coins and send it as soon as possible. Please pass this to all members of your local Club. If you have contacts in other areas-- South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee or any other place, let all the dealers and collectors know.

Remember at all shows and meetings that  coins are involved to keep a watchful eye. At show if you have coins make sure you do not leave your car unattended even for a short while. Local show promoters need to not only watch the door areas but also the parking lot itself during loading and unloading. It is a dangerous hobby and just be careful.

PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG.

Hello,

I had a collection of coins and paper money was stolen during a break-in in downtown Raleigh after 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. I’ll be sending a more comprehensive list, but below is an overall description of the collection, along with a listing of some unique items.

60-70 Morgan uncirculated dollars, MS63 or better, non-key dates, all in new plastic flips. It’s a collection from 1878 to 1921. The collection was in a black, hard plastic three-ring binder that clipped shut. In the binder were pages that held 20, 2 x 2 holder/slides each. Each page also had attached an additional 8 ½ x 11 slot that was left blank, thus making each page 11 x 17. There were about three to four of these full of the collection.

1910 $10 gold piece, uncirculated, BU

1876 $20 gold piece (mint mark ?)

Standing Liberty quarter, date ?, white Capital holder.

$10 Liberty gold piece

(All four were in Capital plastic holders)

Paper money collection in a new black cloth three-ring binder. The pages in the binder were either clear or with a black background. There were about 100 -150 different notes in the binder, including:

About 50 large bank notes in various denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20.

Several National Bank notes in small and large (see below)

About a dozen uncirculated Confederate bills, mostly $10 notes

One novelty $1 bill with a picture of an elderly beaded man instead of George Washington. The series was probably from 1977.

A dozen Chinese bills from the 1990s

A $5 Hawaii note

Approximately10 pieces of fractional currency in different denominations

(All the notes are in nice condition, crisp notes, in thin glassine holders.)

Below are listed some of the more unique items:

Two Roanoke Rapids $10 bank notes; one has serial number E372425H

$1 educational note, in very fine to uncirculated condition

$2 educational note, serial number 88307, in very fine to uncirculated condition

I would appreciate it if you could forward this e-mail to your group members, coin store owners and collectors. This collection is special because it was given to me by my late father. These are the last reminding pieces of his collection and have value beyond numismatic significance.

If you see or hear about any pieces from these collection, please contact me, Greg Hatem at this email or 919-345-0047.
